When is the next UK public holiday?

This year’s Easter long weekend was scorching, with temperatures exceeding 22C across the UK.
Most of us enjoyed a four-day weekend, thanks to Good Friday and Easter Monday being public holidays. Usually, England and Wales have eight bank holidays a year, while Scotland has nine and Northern Ireland has ten.
However, this year the British nations are enjoying an extra bank holiday thanks to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. You won’t have to wait long until the next long holiday weekend either.

The next bank holiday in the UK is Monday May 2, known as May Day in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the start of May in Scotland.
Public holidays for the rest of the year are as follows:
- Thursday, June 2 – Spring Bank Holiday
- Friday, June 3 – Platinum Jubilee Holiday
- Tuesday 12 July – Battle of the Boyne (Orangemen’s Day) (Northern Ireland only)
- Monday August 29 – Summer Bank Holiday
- Wednesday 30 November – St Andrew’s Day (Scotland only)
- Monday December 26 – Boxing Day
- Tuesday, December 27 – Christmas Day (substitute day)
The government website states: “If a public holiday falls on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a public holiday, normally the following Monday. Your employer is not required to give you paid holidays on holidays or holidays.
“Holidays can affect how and when your benefits are paid.”
