USA TODAY Week 4 Bowl Projections
It’s not often that a team improves their domestic standings with a loss, but it seems to be exactly what Florida has done. The Gators lost two points to Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday, but that was pretty impressive for a game in which they were two-touchdown underdogs.
UF has shown that, at the very least, it can give the best teams in the country a competitive game. The outing appears to have impressed USA TODAY’s Erick Smith, who predicts the Gators will reach their fourth consecutive six-bowl New Year’s Eve against Iowa State in the Sugar Bowl.
Here’s what Smith said about Florida.
Florida, at 9th, was the highest-ranked team to lose last Saturday, but the Gators solidified their New Years sixth position in the Sugar Bowl with this narrow loss to Alabama.
UF didn’t make it to the Sugar Bowl during the college football playoff era. The team’s last appearance in the game came after the 2012 season when they were upset by Louisville. The Gators have also never played against the Cyclones.
Smith predicts Georgia and Alabama will advance to the college football playoffs, which means he will likely lose the Gators to future champions in SEC East, Georgia. However, he has Texas A&M in the Peach Bowl as an at-large, which means he currently considers Florida the third-best SEC team.
Florida probably can’t afford a mistake with a team other than the Bulldogs if they want to make an NY6 run, but a comeback is definitely still on the table.
