Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games LIVE: BUILD-UP Opening Ceremony, rowing and archery in progress, Team GB football
HELLO OLYMPIC FANS
After watching the exploits of English footballers at Euro, Dina Asher-Smith is now ready to inspire the nation at the Olympics.
The GB team were uplifted not only by the Three Lions’ run to the final, but also by the words posted on their social media accounts.
Asher-Smith, 25, said: “What Marcus and all the other players have done is fantastic.
“It made me so proud to watch them and see how they behave.
“They have done fantastic throughout the Euro and England have exceeded all of our expectations in the best possible way. They have played fantastic.
“They are a credit to our nation and demonstrate a very good sense of moral leadership.
“As athletes we are really proud, and certainly as a Brit, as a black Brit I was really proud of them during the Euros.
“I thought they represented our nation and our communities incredibly well.
“Certainly, social activism is something I would like to increase. You have to give back.
“It’s an essential part of not only being an athlete but also someone who has had an opportunity.
“The only reason I’m here today is because of the goodwill and hard work of other people on the teams and throughout my community.
“It would be quite selfish not to give back when you have had so many opportunities in your career.
“I am really proud of the way the footballers have done this more and more over the year and proud of the way they have performed at the Euro.”
Elsewhere, rower Moe Sbihi will become the first Muslim to wear the Union Jack at the Olympics opening ceremony.
He said: “It is such an honor to be invited to be the GB team flag bearer. It is an iconic moment in the Olympic Movement – people remember these images.
“I certainly remember the footage of Andy Murray from Rio and even before I was a rower I remember seeing Sir Matt and Sir Steve so that’s something I’m incredibly proud of.
“It will be a surreal experience to attend an Opening Ceremony, but this year with the race schedule it’s actually manageable even though I wasn’t a flag bearer. It will be really special and complement my Olympic puzzle.
“I won a medal, I attended the Closing Ceremony, but now showing up to an Opening Ceremony and leading the team alongside Hannah will be an unforgettable memory that I will never forget. ‘never forget. “
