Liverpool urged to secure ‘short-term’ shock transfer for Manchester United ‘target’

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has urged his former club to become a free agent and Manchester United target Christian Eriksen.

The 30-year-old is available this summer as his contract with Brentford expires and a number of Premier League sides line up for his signature. The likes of United have been linked in recent weeks, while Tottenham and Everton are also said to be of interest.

Liverpool have already made additions to their squad ahead of the new season with Fabio Carvalho and Darwin Nunez set to join on July 1. They are also believed to complete a deal for Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay.

Enrqiue, who made more than 90 appearances for Liverpool during his playing days, believes Eriksen could be a short-term solution for Jurgen Klopp’s midfielder.

He said on his Instagram story (via Metro): “Another interesting player who could be our solution to our midfield and spend nothing because he [Eriksen] is a free agent. It’s a short term solution, but we can wait [Jude] Bellingham next season.

“He will play if he deserves to play like everyone else. Eriksen is a top player and I think he can compete for a starting spot in our XI. The season is very long.

“He’s that kind of player, like Thiago, but maybe a bit more attacking. But Thiago is our magician.”

ECHO understands Ramsay’s arrival will seal incoming deals this summer with a midfielder the priority for 2023. Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham is reportedly interested, but any potential moves will have to wait until next year as the club from Bundesliga have already sold one of their big stars in Erling Haaland.
