Fan View: Should Iheanacho quit Leicester City after Champions League setback?
Goal readers had their say and popular opinion is that the Nigeria international should stay at King Power Stadium
Kelechi Iheanacho has been asked to stay at Leicester City despite the Foxes’ inability to qualify for the Champions League next season, Goal readers say.
Ahead of the start of 2021, the Nigeria international started just two Premier League games without finding the back of the net as he played second fiddle for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
However, a change in fortunes led him to rediscover his form as a goalscorer as his goals proved essential in the Foxes’ FA Cup triumph.
In total, he finished the 2020-21 campaign with 19 goals and seven assists in all competitions to beat Jamie Vardy for the club’s top scorer award.
Even with his exploits, the King Power Stadium giants failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League after slipping to fifth in the English top flight after a 4-2 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur on the last day.
As the Super Eagles star continues to strategize for a better exit next season, we asked our readers whether he should stay at Leicester City despite their failure to qualify for the Champions League or seek a transfer to one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
In a poll taken on Goal Africa’s Twitter account, 85.7% of the total vote wanted the former Manchester City prodigy to stay in Leicestershire.
On the flip side, 14.3% felt he should leave the squad and join one of the best European clubs where he can be assured of playing in the Champions League.
In a social media post, Iheanacho claimed he was proud of the East Midlands squad while saying the King Power Stadium giants will build on their FA Cup triumph the next term.
“Disappointed to miss the UCL qualification, we gave everything until the last moment. I’m proud of my team, winning the FA Cup was a dream for us, ”Iheanacho wrote on his Twitter account.
“We will use this as motivation to come back next season! Thanks to the fans for your support this season. Have a nice summer everyone. “
Moreover, his good looks against Crystal Palace was also voted the club’s goal of the season. The Super Eagle broke through a first effort after being set up by Jonny Evans.
