Chelsea to challenge Champions League trophy against Tottenham Hotspur
Chelsea are playing the first sh * thouse of the new Premier League season, announcing they will parade the Champions League trophy ahead of their friendly with Tottenham Hotspur.
Chelsea won the Champions League in May when they shocked the odds of beating Manchester City in the final at Porto.
Attempts were made to move the final to Wembley to allow more fans to make it to the game, but in the end it was in Portugal.
The Blues will now give more of their fans the chance to see the players with the trophy at Stamford Bridge, ahead of their pre-season friendly with rivals Spurs.
“In the game at Stamford Bridge, the Champions League trophy will be paraded for the first time since the glorious night in Porto last May,” the club said.
The game with Tottenham will take place on August 4, just nine days before the start of the league campaign, and the move will poke fun at Spurs who aren’t even in the Champions League next season.
The north London club haven’t won any trophies since winning the League Cup in 2008 and their lack of trophies is something their rivals often scoff at.
Mauricio Pochettino led them to the final of the European elite club competition in 2019, but they lost to Liverpool with Moussa Sissoko inflicting a penalty in the first minute.
Poch’s successor Jose Mourinho led the club to the Carabao Cup final last season but was sacked just six days before the game at Wembley.
Chelsea are expecting a near-full crowd for their game with Spurs, which will be the first time many people have been at Stamford Bridge since a 4-0 win over Everton in March 2020.
Thomas Tuchel would love to be able to field Erling Haaland in his squad for this game, with the European champions desperately looking to add the Borussia Dortmund forward to their squad.
The Blues have also been linked with a move by Spurs forward Harry Kane, who is expected to clash with them in a friendly.
Tammy Abraham has been linked with a potential exchange option for Chelsea if they try to sign Kane, but the forward seems more likely to join rivals Arsenal at the moment.
