CAF organizes the draw for the first group stage of the Women’s Champions League
Egyptians Wadi Degla and Malians AS Mande will face off in the opening match of the Women’s Champions League Premier after the draw for the group stage of the tournament at CAF headquarters in Egypt.
The twelve-time champions of Egypt, who are also the hosts of the tournament, were placed in Group A alongside AS Mande, Equatorial Guinea League champions Malabo King’s FC and Hasaacas Ladies FC of Ghana.
Group B will pit triple South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Kenyan champions Vihiga Queens, Moroccans AS FAR and Nigerian champions Rivers Angels against each other.
CAF Competitions Director Samson Adamu hailed the competition’s draw as a “historic moment” as the governing body moved into the implementation phase of the tournament.
“Part of our implementation is the Women’s Champions League which we are doing the draw here today,” Adamu told the CAF media team.
“Now we are here and CAF is in fact the second confederation to have a fully-fledged CAF Women’s Champions League. It’s great for us.
After the draw, Wadi Degla head coach Wael Elsayed said his team’s goal was to win the competition at home.
“We have started to prepare since mid-July. We had a physical program to prepare and we added new players. We will have a closed camp in Ain Sokhna next week to prepare for some friendly matches. We will have another closed camp just before the tournament.
“Our ambition is to win this Champions League, especially its first edition played here in Egypt. We want to win the title.
The Women’s Champions League will take place in the Egyptian capital Cairo from November 5 to 19.
