Bills’ Dion Dawkins and Daryl Williams rank among OL’s best via PFF
Pro Football Focus is very fond of the outside of the Buffalo Bills offensive line. The interior is a different story, however.
As the offseason progresses, the football analysis site continues to break down position by position and rank the top players in each location.
As for the tackle position, both Bills starters Dion Dawkins and Daryl Williams were recently congratulated. The interior, including the likes of Mitch Morse and Jon Feliciano does not show up. in such a category.
First up, here’s what PFF thinks of Dawkins, who placed PFF’s 21st best tackle in the NFL:
Dawkins is the model for consistency when it comes to protecting the quarterback. His career-low blocking success rating stands at 76.2 (2018), while his career high is 79.2 (2020). His race blocking has been more fragile, but he’s been more impactful in this area in 2020 than in the previous two seasons. Dawkins had a race blocking score of 75.1 last year, more than 10 points better than his 2018 and 2019 scores and closer to his 2017 rookie campaign number.
And Williams, who pointed at No.28:
After a five-year stint with Carolina to begin his NFL career, Williams joined the Bills ahead of the 2020 season to be their starting tackle. Not only did he play in all 19 games, but he also played at an extremely high level. His 80.0 pass-blocking rating placed fourth among right tackles. If Williams can stay healthy and replenish another season like this in 2021, I suspect he will shoot that roster.
PFF scores often need to be taken with a grain of salt, but the eye test fits here. The mobility of Bills quarterback Josh Allen helps, but opposing edge defenders in 2020 were mostly kept at bay by Dawkins and Williams last season.
Morse & Co.’s pass protection in the middle was also good, but the inside of the Buffalo line was exposed in the running play. Running backs Devin Singletary and Zack Moss return in 2021, and the Bills’ O-line midfielder really needs to give them a lot more help before they can end up on such a PFF roster.
