He will be a familiar enemy of Cristiano Ronaldo on Wednesday when his Manchester United travel to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg. The Colchoneros are the team he’s scored the most against in his career apart from Sevilla, and the timing could be good given the defense is playing at very poor levels compared to other seasons. After breaking the hearts of Atleti fans time and time again at the UCL, he is looking to do it again here, but this time with the Red Devils.

Here’s what to know about the game, this week’s schedule and our expert predictions for Wednesday’s showdown:

A game to watch: Cristiano Ronaldo against Jose María Giménez. The Uruguayan centre-back will be tasked with sticking with the Portuguese superstar, and he’s a player who can challenge him, especially in the air. Facing an Atleti defense isn’t easy, but it’s certainly been more manageable than in recent years. Diego Simeone’s side may not have conceded in the weekend’s 3-0 win over Osasuna but their defensive form before that was quite shaky. There was that 1-0 loss to relegation contenders Levante and then they conceded several goals in four consecutive matches before that. This is a defense that has dealt with so many injuries, but even when healthy they have been a disappointment. Ronaldo against Giménez will be key to the outcome of Wednesday’s game. –Roger Gonzalez

Most likely to score: Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s United’s most important striker, but there’s also a ton of history against one of Real Madrid’s arch-rivals. Apart from Sevilla (27), there is no other team against which Ronaldo has scored more goals in his career, with 25 on a goalscoring rate of 0.71 goals per game. He broke their hearts on several occasions, including scoring Real Madrid’s winning penalty in the 2016 Champions League final. –Roger Gonzalez

Choice man of the match: David de Gea. The Manchester United goalkeeper, playing against his former club, makes plenty of crucial saves to leave this level ahead of the second leg. –Roger Gonzalez

Match prediction: Atlético Madrid 1, Manchester United 1. The Red Devils start the game on the right foot as they take the lead through Ronaldo (who else?), but second-half woes continue for United as Atleti equalize late with a Luis Suarez strike . –Roger Gonzalez
